Advise for women travelling alone
Hello again. My mind keeps going back to a conversation I had with someone while swimming in my hotel pool in the Bahamas. I said hi to a girl sitting alone by the pool. She told me she was never going to travel alone again. She was not having a good time. If you are a dependant person travelling alone isn't for you. I love going alone because I know how to blend in so it is hard to tell if I am alone or not. Leave all jewelry and anything expensive at home. Most of the men on these islands are trouble and you cannot tell which one is safe and not so always know your surroundings. They love canadians down there and I met a few of them who had retired there.
Now in the computer age you can see what your hotel looks like before you agree to take it. You can have direct contact with anybody all over the world. It is an amazing time. Always make sure you are safe. I also learned just recently that you should find the canadian consolutes address of the country you plan on visiting. Once you get settled in catch a cab there and tell them who you are, where you are staying and for how long. Get a contact number in case of any emergencies. Once you do that and I assume you remember to buy travellers medical insurance. You then find a canadian doctor and get a contact number. You might get hurt and only the canadian doctor there is familiar with our paper work.
Make all copies of all your ID and e-mail it to your hotmail account so you can access it anywhere in the world if you lose anything. Like an idiot I got extremely drunk after I arrived in the bahamas with a work friend who I ignored. I woke up with the worlds worst hangover at 10pm fully clothed in my hotel bed. I have no idea how I got there. I then tried to find anyone with a can of pop because I was so dehydrated. There was a group of guys there from california. One I met before I passed out. He rescued me. He gave me something to drink with a doobie and a blanket looking over the ocean on the beach. I met so many nice people travelling alone. I was only alone when I wanted to be. I am very independant that I always need time away from everyone. Some alone time.
I had a nice room with no tv, phone computer etc. I only wanted a bed, air conditioning and a bathroom. I found one on the beach in negril Jamaica for only $40 american a night.
I always went for three weeks because it is a very long trip there and back so the more time you have the better. It takes you about a week to slow down to their pace. Then you can relax and enjoy as much as you can. One full day there is like two days here. I came home everytime with a nice tan and so relaxed. I always went in april. Oh that is something else important you have to find out online before you go. They have their hurricane season there so you avoid those months. Then someone told me you have a shower and then go outside it will be so humid you will be sweating even in the shade. Well april is their spring time. Summer kicked in the very day I was leaving. Also, you should all know that spring break is in march. Everybody leaves at the same time to return to school. Well I found out most of the hotels were all empty all at once. The owners now have an empty hotel so I made my taxi driver work for his $50 fee and made him go into different hotels to ask the price. Then I found one called merrills right on the beach . well he came back and said $50 a night. I told him to go back and tell them the bungolow across the street was only $40 a night. They immediately said ok you have it for that price. So you see you need to get the whole year weather pattern and don't forget about the busy and off seasons. I was supposed to go with four other girls from work to jamaica but my boss wouldn't let me go. When they all came back and showed me pictures my boss said you can go now. So I was gone in a week for three weeks alone.
The first time I was in Jamaica I went to a famous bar with a black girl staying at my hotel alone also. We got there and found a seat and ordered then I went to the washroom. well while I was gone my friend was setting me up with a handsome white guy from new york sitting alone. she made sure I sat down beside him. Well I fell madly in lust immediately. We were together every moment for two weeks until he had to leave before me. I knew saying goodbye would be so hard to do so we made an agreement that he would wait until I fell asleep. I woke up alone and was heartbroken. That romance was better then any romance novel. I gave him my number and did not ask for his so that I would not be tempted to call. I wanted it to happen if it was meant to be. Well when I got home he called saying he came back when he got home and missed me so much he went back the next day and I had left a couple days early cause I was so sad. We talked a bit then he called again two weeks later telling me he is coming here to stay with me from new york. I was so excited. I never heard from him again. It was not meant to be so I lost him but he is in my happy memories. I look at his picture sometimes.
What I forgot to mention is the further in advance you book with an airline of your choice the cheaper it is. Leaving red eye is cheaper. Now you can even do better and just cross the border which is only a ten minute drive from here and fly out of bellingham or seattle to save maybe $300 off the total. Our airport vancouver is apparantely one of the most expensive airports in the world. We also have an airport in abbotsford just half an hour from here. So there is many more options since I was doing these trips. I would choose the airline I wanted and just called directly buying a seat for six months down the road on my credit card which I had paid off in no time. I never booked my hotel.
I stayed at one all inclusive resorts in mexico for a week once. They are so expensive and everybody was finally all relaxed just before we were leaving. Nobody wanted to leave. Also they only played our music so it didn't fit with the country you were visiting. Also we had to reserve our dinner times in the morning. You don't feel like eating the same time each night. One night you maybe hungry at 5pm and the next night not until maybe 10pm which didn't work out. I will not go to another all inclusive resorts. too expensive and they only have one week packages. I got invited to this mexico trip all expenses paid for a week. I just started working and I had to ask my boss for a week off. He said no at first then I told him getting a paid all inclusive vacation may never happen to me again which was true. So he finally gave in and said yes. I brought home a huge bottle of kahula which I love for only $6 which lasted me about ten months. I also went through the market place one day and found some very cheap clothes not worth buying. On the way out I found a shop with its own door. I went in and it was full of real good quality leather clothes. I bought a very nice knee length skirt for $20. I could have gotten pants and a jacket for under $100. The other couple and my male friend were a drag. They were not into partying. They all owned their own businesses so they paniced closing up shop for a week and when they got back they had so much work to do to get caught up. Not me. I got home from the airport about 2am and couldn't go to sleep when I got home. I usually got up at 5am so I stayed up and went to work my usual time. Everyone covered for me so there was not alot I had to do. I grew up in a union home and my brother is in the construction union making good money and I have been a union member for almost 24 yrs now. I don't know one person who has been with one company that long.
Out of all the places I went I like the Bahamas the most. I knew a couple who lived there who I had met at a wedding here in canada. They told me to call them if I ever made it down there so I did. I went out with them a couple times. I had such a good time with them. I stayed in Nassua which is the capital of a whole chain of beautiful islands. There was so much more to see. I went on many booze cruises where they supplied drinks and food and snorkeling equipment. They would take you to a private island and anchor until we all were done. Going back paradise island attached to nassua with a bridge was on our right hand side. I saw merv griffons private air strip. I think he is gone now and am assuming his kids own it now. I heard people came there from all over the world to enjoy the best scuba diving in the exuma keys.
I would like to find someone else to be my investment partner and share the expenses. I met a guy in jamaica who was a construction worker in detroit USA. When they shut down in the winter he would go stay in the two bdrm house alone for about six months a year. When he went back home his friend spent the other six months there. I'd sure like a set up like that. Actually now you can tap into some classified papers in the bahamas and read all their rental ads. I found one woman who lives in ontario canada who has a one bdrm condo in the grand bahamas island. I need to bring my cats and the caretaker said no animals. I cannot be without my girls for six months a year. I just met a pilot that is gone half of every month and he has a little dog. He spends $600 a month putting him into a kennel of some sort. My mom and dad used to take off on their boat all summer and put the cat in a boarding house that was really nice but expensive.
Well that is my good advise I hope someone will learn and use my advise. Bye for now.
